Smut writer Cass Ford began creating smoldering male protagonists when she was five years old and convinced her aunt that she had a hot and heavy kindergarten boyfriend. In grade school, she penned tales on her parents’ typewriter and by middle school sold her own love and gossip magazines to friends. As a preteen at sleepover camp, Cass often told playful, steamy bedtime stories to her bunkmates. After earning her Bachelor of Journalism degree and several TV/film certificates, Cass continued to hone her passion for storytelling as a development producer for broadcast news and unscripted television. Born and raised in Canada, she now resides in California.

Q&A with Author Cass Ford
  • How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process? Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters?
    • I gave Sierra some information about character backgrounds, like accents. Most of that information was in the novel as I introduced each character, so I didn’t have to give too much detail. Before I chose Sierra to narrate, she sent me a sample scene with Chase and Morgan interacting together. There was some back and forth between us to nail down Chase’s voice, but once she found it, Sierra really ran with the rest of the audiobook. Most of my notes on the full audiobook were small grammar or pronunciation corrections, and there were few. One I remember was the word balayage, which I had to lookup myself. I’m SO pleased with how the audiobook turned out. Sierra did a fantastic job!
  • Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing?
    • Of course! The whole novel concept was inspired by a male pornstar who I actually had lunch with as part of my research. Not gonna say who… The porn sets I visited for research also influenced various scenes and characters in the book. That investigative research was critical in shaping the novel. So many scenes and beats and moments from the book came from real-life scenes and beats and moments.
  • How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for writing?
    • Burnout is very real. Working fulltime in television and living that author life on the side can be exhausting. I think managing and balancing my time helps. I’m pretty Type A, so I like to get things done immediately. But being able to sense when I feel overworked and let some emails or tasks slide until I feel up for them, that’s a skill I’ve been working on since the book came out in June. I remind myself that writing and marketing are not life or death. It should be fun, not stressful.
  • What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or as inferior to “real reading”?
  • People are entitled to their own opinions. But man are preachy people annoying. Everybody absorbs content differently. I personally take in information much better when reading it, but respect those who best consume content by listening. To those critical of audiobooks, don’t listen to them. But who are you to judge others for their preferred method? You do you, we’ll do us.
  • What gets you out of a writing slump? What about a reading slump?
    • I don’t really have time for writing slumps. Whenever I find time to write, I have to take advantage and dive in. As for reading slumps, I actually just had one. I’d started reading a few books in a row that I just couldn’t get into, so I took a reading break. I was also busy preparing the Prince of Sin audiobook release. But after a few weeks, I realized I missed reading, so to get back on track, I ordered a book in a totally different genre than I’d read recently—non-fiction. And so far, Gene Weingarten’s One Day has been a captivating read.
  • In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of writing a stand-alone novel vs. writing a series?
    • When it comes to marketing and sales, a series generally makes the most sense. Readers who love Book 1 will continue onto Books 2, 3, 4… Thus, more sales. But I think sequels need to make sense. If they feel forced, readers will know. I recently read a dark romance series where the first and second books captivated me, but the third fell flat. It was slow and stuffed full of dull exposition. I found myself skipping over paragraphs to get through it.
    • I outlined Prince of Sin as a standalone, but had a rough three-book series plan in case I changed my mind. But when I finished writing it, I felt the characters’ stories had been told and closed it out accordingly. Since publishing, the feedback has been that readers would love for Kali or another secondary character to get their own novel. So that is something I’m considering in the future. Would love to hear who my audiobook listeners think deserves a standalone novel!
  • Have any of your characters ever appeared in your dreams?
    • Strangely, I don’t think I’ve ever dreamed about any Prince of Sin characters or scenes. Over many days for several years, this book consumed my thoughts. But once I fell asleep, it never crept into my mind.
  • What's your favorite:
    • Food Cheese
    • Song Portland, Maine by Donovan Woods
    • Book The Best of Everything by Rona Jaffe
    • Television show Friends
    • Movie E.T. or the Back to the Future series
    • Band The Wood Brothers
    • Sports teams
      • NHL - Toronto Maple Leafs
      • NBA - Toronto Raptors
      • NFL - Pittsburgh Steelers
    • City Toronto, Ontario, Canada
  • Are any of those things referenced in appearance in your work?
    • Growing up in Toronto, I was raised on hockey. So the Anaheim Ducks vs. L.A. Kings rivalry in Prince of Sin came naturally to me. A Toronto Maple Leafs rivalry didn’t make sense since the book takes place in Southern California. My current work in progress has a few scenes in Toronto, one of which is at a Toronto Maple Leafs game. Another features some fictional Toronto Raptors players out at a bar/nightclub.
  • If you had the opportunity to live anywhere in the world while writing a book that took place in that same setting, where would you choose?
    • Definitely London, England or New York City, two cities that feel similar to me in some ways. In Los Angeles, I have to drive everywhere and my neighborhood feels somewhat suburban. I’d love to spend a few months living downtown in either of those cities, right in the action, walking and taking the tube or subway to get around.

Awesome Excerpt Thursday - Prince of Sin by Cass Ford

Prince of Sin – Book Blurb:

When savvy gossip vlogger Morgan Sidney gets assigned the breakup of porn’s most illustrious couple, she strikes a deal with her boss—if she scores an exclusive, she’ll get promoted. So when the famous and flirtatious Prince of Sin offers to fulfill her three wildest sex fantasies, Morgan must decide whether she’ll keep things professional or surrender and explore her sensual side.

As someone who despises the media, why is Chase Prince spending time with a reporter? Clearly, he’s intrigued. But can a scorched sinner—and the biggest smut star around—let a fierce civilian enter his domain?

Prince of Sin takes readers beyond Tinseltown’s glossy Hollywood Hills to Silicone Valley—for a behind-the-scenes look at a sometimes bleak, always risqué world.

Prince of Sin - Excerpt:

After watching young Martini McPie accept the Prince of Sin’s face shot a day prior, Morgan needed a reminder that she owned her own sexuality. She took a rejuvenating exercise class and hurried to work to finesse her exclusive. In the car, she held a country music sing-along dance party to celebrate choosing her next beat. Entering Slander just after 9 a.m., she strode keenly toward her desk.
“Morgan!” bellowed a too-familiar voice as Chase Prince emerged from behind a pillar. “Or is it Barbie now?” Stalking forward, he unfurled for a hug.
Startled, she nearly flung backward but quickly regained composure and swerved around him to her desk. On set she’d succumbed to his charms, but Slander was her turf.
Chase followed, hovering.
Omigod, Sean mouthed from his desk, faux fanning himself hysterically.
“I have one hundred things to do,” she told Chase assertively, perusing a file folder.
“Make me number one-oh-one?” he asked, smirking.
She glanced up as he winked. “I’d rather pass a kidney stone.” Her fierce dark eyes pierced the man who helmed the industry that plagued her. Standing upright, she glowered toughly.
“I’m kidding,” he insisted. “But joking aside, can we chat?”
Acknowledging the room, Morgan found numerous colleagues staring. Who could blame their intrigue as the Prince of Sin stood by her cubicle, attempting to flirt? To avoid a dramatic scene, Morgan clasped his bicep, which literally bulged, so she opted for his forearm and guided him toward the conference room.
“Who’s Barbie Blue?” he asked.
“My pseudonym,” she whispered. Barbie was her deceased paternal grandmother, the resilient single mother who’d raised her father. And blue was simply her favorite color. “I don’t need my respected family to learn I’m covering the seediest biz on earth.”
Chase furrowed his brow as Morgan pulled him inside and shut a solid wooden door. “Don’t you have someplace to be?” she asked. “Teenagers lined up to sit on your face?”
Her sass made his dick twinge. Attempting to ignore it, he skipped to the point. “Your fact checker called my agent. Could you not use that one Viola Emperor quote? The one I said off record?”
“Funny,” she stated. “I specified that everything was on record.”
Determined to negotiate, he attempted an adorable, pouty baby face. “Please. I beg, I plead.”
“Oh, all right!” Morgan agreed facetiously, eyes bright.
Reading her perky, exaggerated expression, he asked, “Really?”
“No,” she chortled.
His pout deepened.
“Ech. Do girls actually fall for that?” She pinched his cheek condescendingly. “Darling, you’re cute as a button. But we’re done here.”
As she grabbed the doorknob, he tried to stop her by placing a firm, strong hand over hers. Morgan paused with a shiver and gnawed her lower lip. Chase noticed her nibbling and grinned, delighting in her reaction to his touch. She blinked rapidly and whipped her hand free.
“I could lose my job,” Chase begged.
“Oh no! The Prince of Sin will lose his loyal following of horny adolescent girls,” Morgan mocked. “That quote makes you sound sharp.”
“Sounding sharp isn’t something I care about.”
“It’s not?”
“I care about remaining employed,” he explained. “And that quote puts my career at stake.”
“My career’s at stake too,” she said. “My boss is a dick. And I deserve a promotion.”
His dick twitched again. Her drive excited him, confusingly because he also couldn’t stand her.
“My idiot fact checker shouldn’t have mentioned that clip. Stupid interns.”
Chase clasped her shoulder. “That sounds stressful, Morgan.”
Inhaling deeply, she breathed in his refreshingly sudsy scent. Her name flowed from his mouth like honey dripping from a spoon, sugary and inviting, though not sweet enough to pull the best quote.
He massaged her neck from behind. “It must be stressful for a smart, sexy career woman to deal with idiot interns and a dickhead boss.”
“Yes, it is.” Morgan unwound as his sturdy thumb expertly loosened a shoulder blade knot. “I don’t understand how these morons get promoted and I—” She inhaled his spearmint toothpaste with a touch of whiskey and wondered if the booze was remnants from a fresh morning pick-me-up or a wild night out. Spotting his hand on her shoulder, she bit her lip. A tiny, curious part of her considered succumbing to his intoxicating spell and expert fingers. But her sensibilities prevailed. She harrumphed hotly and scowled.
Chase threw his arms back defensively but refused to step away. “I’m innocent,” he feigned.
“Until proven guilty,” she suggested.
He inched closer, backing her into the door. “I’ll make you a deal.”
“You have nothing I desire.”
“Not even sex in public?” he answered, planting his hands on either side of her head. “That seems like something you desperately desire.”
She bit her lip again.
“And your colleagues are right outside.” His face inched closer, like an erotically charged magnet. “I’d gladly explore your top three fantasies.”
“Top three?” Morgan hollered boisterously. “What are you, a genie?”
“Only if you’ll rub my magic lamp,” he said with a wink.
She wanted to huff and sneer with a bitchy side-eye while cackling in his face. But her treacherous clit craved attention. It took every ounce of willpower not to nibble his full lower lip just an inch away. Determined, she ducked under his arm and moved aside. To refrain from literally swooning, she leaned on the conference table.
His prying eyes scanned her trim figure. “You should probably get back to those hundred things,” he said, twisting the doorknob. “Here’s my personal number.” Chase handed over a business card. “Maybe we can continue this sometime. Depending on what you decide to post, of course.”

He exited, leaving her to catch a shaky breath.

Excerpt

I phoned my regular customers and told them, “I’m going freelance.” To a tee, they all said, “It’s about time. We have your number. We’ll call.”
Idiot me thought they’d phone the next day. How stupid could I be!

I took a job at the local coffee shop, cleaning tables to pay the rent.

A month went by, and finally, I had a couple of calls.
Mary was the first.
She phoned me. “Willy, it’s Mary. There’s a blockage in the downstairs bathroom.”
“Don’t worry. No job’s too small... or too large. My call-out fee is thirty dollars.”
“That’s too low. When can you be here?”
My shift ends in half an hour.
“I’m finishing up a job. I can be there in an hour. Same address?”
“Yes, I’ll be expecting you.”
It took me forty minutes to get there. Traffic was light, but it still took me forever. I forgot what a nice neighborhood she lives in. Good, I can park in the driveway. I put on my leather tool belt, picked up my toolbox, and knocked on the door. I’m late, and she’s right. I’m underselling myself. This is close to where I live, and it took ages to get here. I could easily lose fifty minutes each way. That makes it less than fifteen dollars an hour. I get paid as much cleaning tables.
“Willy, thank God you came. I’m at my wit’s end. The bathroom is at the end of the hallway. It doesn’t work.”
Mary was five-feet-one and wearing a loose brown top with a wraparound caftan skirt. I guessed her age as late thirties.
She’s kept herself in shape... short dirty-blonde hair, green eyes, and a dimple in her left cheek when she smiles. It’s slightly off-center—sexy cute. She’s hot. How come I never noticed how alluring she is on my previous visits? Focus. I’ve a job to do.
I gave her a hug. She melted into me, and I whispered, “Don’t worry, Mary. It’s not the end of the world. I’ll fix it, or my name’s not Willy.”
“I knew I could rely on you.”
She squeezed my ass, and I responded by giving her a peck on the cheek.
Mary smiled and said, “Follow me, it’s this way.”

Awesome Excerpt Thursday ~ Kaidyn's Courage by Diana Waters

Book title: Kaidyn's Courage
Author: Diana Waters
Genre: M/M Romance / Fantasy
Publisher: eXtasy Books
Date published: March 15, 2019
Book length: Approx. 51,000 words

Blurb: Kaidyn is the son of the queen and a trainee officer in the kingdom of Sareen. He is also a Half-Blood—his father is from Iskandir, a neighboring kingdom which has been at war with Sareen for many years. Bitter and angry at the prejudice he faces, Kaidyn meets Sorin, a healer from one of Sareen’s most prominent noble families. As their relationship deepens, the war between Sareen and Iskandir grows worse. Not only will the pair inevitably become involved with the conflict one way or another, but Sorin is also hiding a secret, and time is running out for them both.

Note: This is the second book in the Wild Magics series (the first being the short novella, A Trust to Follow). However, both books are completely readable as standalone stories, as they take place in the same universe but feature a different cast.

Excerpt:

“Oi! The Watch, run!”
Kaidyn’s ears had caught it, too—the clinking of steel as a patrol wandered nearby, perhaps attracted by the sounds of their struggle. No others could walk the city streets openly armed, even by day. Not that Kaidyn wanted to stick around any longer than his attackers. He had no wish to be locked up for the night either.
The man directly in front of him seized him by the collar of his shirt. “Something to remember me by,” he muttered, and Kaidyn knew his mouth was open but couldn’t hear his own gasp as he was dealt a final blow. The hit wasn’t in his stomach again, as he’d been expecting, but at the side of his head. It felt like an object struck him, not merely a fist, but something blunt and hard. He felt the blood begin to drip from the base of his skull and trickle down his neck. The world wavered around him as the last of the men ran off. Cowards, all.
Kaidyn took an uneven step, then several more. He tilted toward the ground but did not fall. Luck. Where is Luck? I have to find him, before...
He was still so angry, but his thoughts were leaking out of him along with the blood, the dizziness beginning to con-sume them. If I don’t hurry...
The stars were wheeling somewhere above him. When did I fall to the ground? He tried to search for a familiar landmark, but his sight was failing him. Kaidyn had either drank too much or been hit too hard.
“Oh!” Kaidyn heard a gasp, but it had not come from him. It wasn’t Luck, either. He tried to get up, to defend himself once more, but his hands met only empty air.
“I’m not going to hurt you, I promise—”
Kaidyn growled, his tone low and furious.
“All right, all right,” the voice soothed him. “I’ll just wait until you’re ready to walk again, shall I?” The unknown per-son sounded sympathetic. Gentle, even, and impossibly, unbearably kind. But that must have been in his head, because surely nobody who saw Kaidyn in his current state could be anything but disappointed, disgusted, or a combination of the two.
“It’s going to be all right,” the voice continued, and to Kaidyn’s astonishment he felt a cool hand touching his brow, brushing wisps of hair from his forehead. He could not remember the last time he had been touched with such tenderness. “I have you. You’re safe now. I won’t leave you alone here.”
Kaidyn shook his head, forcing his sight to clear. A pair of eyes stared anxiously back down at him and drew him in, as though calling him on from somewhere. But from where? Where...
Kai!
He had definitely imagined that part, because this stranger, whoever he was, could not have known his name, much less the one reserved for his closest friends.
Kai!
But he could not think any longer, he was falling, falling... and running again, running away from the pain and the bile rising in his throat, escaping everything but the darkness that finally overtook him to swallow him whole.
