Television A- Z – The BadAss B’s Part Five

So this is my version of the A to Z Challenge. I am listing the shows having the biggest impact on me, not necessarily the best shows in each category. I thought they were the best when I was watching them.

See the whole list of B's Here!

Rounding out the Badass B's are some guilty pleasures I couldn't leave off the list!!

Baywatch (1989-2001)
This long-running series follows the adventures of a team of lifeguards on a crowded resort beach. Veteran lifeguard Mitch Buchannon watches over the younger lifeguards that come and go with each passing season as they keep the beaches safe for vacationers. Frequently he must take action to save them from the raging seas and from the raging tempers that sometimes flare up between the young guards in this stressful job. Written by Jean-Marc Rocher

Not sure if anyone else remembers the very beginnings of Baywatch, touted as a pretty serious show. The original starred Davis Hasselhoff, and Parker Stevenson (I remember him fondly as Frank Hardy on the Hardy Boys / Nancy Drew Mysteries) This apparently did not fly with the Saturday afternoon audience and was initially canceled by NBC. Revamped and relaunched, Baywatch evolved into the slow running, hard body icon it is now. Referred to as ‘Babe Watch’ due to the numerous Playboy Playmates of the Month it either launched or had cast and show staple Pamela Anderson’s curvy form the show is a naughty pleasure. Referenced in pop culter frequently, it was the favorite pastime of Chandler and Joey on FRIENDS. It has even become a major motion picture ( a spoof of it anyway) starring Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron. Looks pretty funny to be honest. Love it or hate it, it is a Badass B and worthy of a spot on the list.

Beverly Hills 90210 (1990-2000)

Originally based around the lives of a group of high school students living in the wealthy Beverly Hills neighborhood, Beverly Hills 90210 followed the teens into their college years and beyond. The kids become friends and enemies, fall in and out of love, and go through an endless series of crises as this small group somehow becomes personally involved in every newsworthy social issue from alcoholism to South African apartheid to pregnancy to AIDS. Written by Jean-Marc Rocher

Another guilty pleasure, I admit I watched and loved it. All ten years of it. From the cast changes to the Dylan-Kelly-Brandon Triangle to Donna and David off again on again angst. Like or not Beverly Hills 90210 brought back the prime time soap opera paving the way for Melrose Place, Gossip Girl, the OC and even Pretty Little Liars. Again, not Emmy worthy but still mindless fun. They were kids living the good life, with lots of drama, crisis and life ending critical situations. Loved it, a guilty pleasure for my generation!

The show had such an impact they tried a relaunch in 2008 – 90210. It even brought back some of the original cast but was not quite as successful as the original only lasting five seasons.

That is all for the Badass B’s friends. On to the Cataclysmic C’s! See you next week!
